An app is a start. A chat is where it gets fun.
Duolingo can help you learn new words. But what happens when someone talks fast, uses a word you do not know, or asks you a question back? That is your chance to try what you have learned. You do not need to speak perfectly. You just need to start talking.
Find a language exchange, not just a lesson
A language exchange is simple: you help someone practice your language, and they help you practice theirs. Try a short chat over coffee. You can even split the time: 15 minutes in each language.

Try new words while you help out
Helping at a school or a local event can give you lots of chances to listen and talk. Start with small jobs and ask people to teach you useful words. You might learn how to say ‘Where does this go?’ before you learn anything from a book.

Staying with a local Host can give you easy moments to practice: cooking dinner, asking about a bus, or sharing a story from home. You can offer to teach your Host a word from your language, too. If you are planning a stay, read how to find Hosts and send a request. You can search for Hosts who speak a language you want to practice, but ask if they want to chat rather than expecting a lesson.
Not staying with a Host? Look for a language chat or coffee meetup through Couchsurfing Events. You can search by city and event name.
