Product Update: Introducing “Friends in Common”!

Friends of friends

You’re connected to Couchsurfers all over the world – and now you can see how.

We’ve recently reintroduced a popular feature to show how you connect to other Couchsurfing members. You’ll now be able to see at a glance whether you have any friends in common with people who show up in search results, as well as on their profiles.

When you navigate to a profile you’ll now see a list of the Couchsurfing friends you have in common with that member. It’s a great way to see how the Couchsurfing community is connected, and a great conversation starter.

“Hey Don! I see that you know Andrew. Andrew and I went to high school together! How did you guys meet? I’m coming to Egypt this May – I’d love to meet up with you for lunch and swap Andrew stories!”

You’ll be able to see Friends in Common in other places on Couchsurfing as well, such as Host Search, your messages, and your Couchrequests. When you receive a Couchrequest, you’ll see your Friends in Common in the Member Overview.

Adding Couchsurfing Friends will now enhance your Couchsurfing experience in a way it hasn’t in the past. Be sure to connect your Couchsurfing account to your Facebook to see which of your friends are also on Couchsurfing! Once you connect your Facebook account, you’ll be able to see which of your Facebook friends have Couchsurfing profiles in the Friends tab of your profile. Of course, your Facebook friends are private to you. No one else will be able to see who you’re connected to until you add friends on Couchsurfing.

The Host Preferences and Friends in Common features are just the beginning of our mission to make the Couchsurfing community more personal, and we’re excited to explore the next steps! Every Couchsurfing member has the potential to be your new best friend – and we want to make it as easy as possible to find that Couchsurfer you’ll keep in touch with for many years to come.

  1. Cool! Thanks for mostly bringing back a feature that I had missed.

Now can you PLEASE clean up the Friends list so they get displayed in some kind of order? It’s to the point now where I’m listed as attending a random event in the future just so I can go to the invite link and see my friends alphabetically. I’m sure this was collateral damage from a recent update, but please fix it!

    Thank you!

  2. My brother suggested I might like this blog. He was once entirely right. This put up truly made my day. You can not believe simply how so much time I had spent for this info! Thank you!

  3. much better would be to have references in common. There are many more references, and I really can trust the people whom I’ve referenced

  4. Would love to be able to filter on this when looking for a host like on the old website. Would love to have the map with all my cs contacts back.
