Couchsurfing Verification is optional. You can join, host Travelers, stay with Hosts, go to Events, and join Hangouts without it. Verification adds a badge to your profile after you confirm your identity with a government-issued ID. It is a separate add-on from your Membership.
Think of it as a “hey, I’m a real person” sticker. Some Members like having one. Plenty of Members don’t bother. Both are totally fine.

What is Couchsurfing Verification?
Verification is a quick ID check. You show a government-issued ID, and Couchsurfing confirms it matches you. Once that’s done, a Verification Badge shows up on your profile and across the platform, on mobile and web.
That’s all it does. It doesn’t replace References, and it doesn’t make someone a better Host or Traveler.
Is Verification the same as Membership?
No. They are two different things.
- Membership is what lets you use Couchsurfing. That includes hosting Travelers, staying with Hosts, Hangouts, Communities, and Events. Joining requires a paid Membership. Membership also keeps Couchsurfing ad-free, means Couchsurfing does not sell Member data, and helps support the 24/7 Safety & Support team.
- Verification is an optional ID check that adds a badge to your profile.

Do I have to verify to host or stay with someone?
No. Verification is not required to use Couchsurfing. If you’d like to verify, you can do it anytime.
What IDs work for Verification?
Couchsurfing accepts a passport, a driver’s license, or a national ID card. What they look like depends on where you live.
How long does Verification take?
Automated checks usually take just a few minutes, and you’ll get an in-app notification when it’s done.
If the automated check doesn’t work, don’t panic. You’ll be notified in your Activity Center, and you can contact support to request a manual review. A manual review doesn’t guarantee a different outcome. Open a Support ticket.
Why does Couchsurfing ask for a government ID?
A government ID is a clear way to confirm that a person is who they say they are. That gives the badge one simple meaning for everyone: this person’s identity was checked. Verification confirms identity. It is not a guarantee of conduct, so good judgment still matters when you meet someone new.

Is my ID info safe?
Couchsurfing partners with Entrust, a trusted identity verification provider, to handle the ID check. Your ID documents and photos are encrypted and stored securely by Entrust only for the duration of your verification.
Entrust (formerly known as Onfido) securely handles your documents and biometric data. To see exactly how that data is handled, read the Entrust privacy notice.
How do I know if a Host or Traveler is a good match?
Verification is one signal. References are the other, and they are the bigger one.
Every Member’s profile shows References from people they’ve hosted, stayed with, or met up with. Members can read these References before agreeing to a stay or a meetup. Couchsurfing generally keeps References up so both sides can share honest experiences. It may hide or remove ones that clearly break the rules.
So a smart check looks like this:
- Read their References.
- Check if they have a Verification Badge.
- Message them and see if the vibe feels right.
What if I have a safety concern?
Tell our 24/7 Safety & Support team. Open a Safety ticket. If you are in immediate danger, contact local authorities first.
