37 Couchsurfing Communities You Need to Join

Couchsurfing has always been about the people. Communities is where that shows up most clearly: hundreds of groups built around a shared interest, a shared identity, or a shared corner of the map. Some are for planning a trip. Some are for finding your people before you ever leave home. Here’s a tour through a few worth knowing about.

Couchsurfing communities on web and mobile app

Start here: Advice

If you’re new to hosting or surfing, these two are the closest thing to a manual, written by people who’ve actually done it.

Traveling on a budget

Couchsurfing started as a way to see the world without a hotel budget, and these communities carry that spirit forward, whether you’re hitching a ride, riding a bus, or just trying to stretch a flight deal.

Finding your travel crew

Not every trip needs to be solo. These groups are built for meeting people, whether that’s a travel partner for your next trip or a community that matches how you like to move through the world.

Around a shared interest

Some of the best connections happen when you find people who care about the same niche thing you do. These groups organize around passions rather than places.

LGBTQ+ communities

For queer travelers looking for hosts, hangouts, or just a group that gets it, these communities span cities, countries, and continents.

By Destination

Planning a trip somewhere specific? There’s a good chance a community already exists for it, full of locals and past visitors sharing what they know.

When you need a couch, fast

Plans change. These communities exist for the moments when you need a place to stay on short notice, or you’re a host willing to take a last-minute request.

Join one, or join a dozen

You don’t need to pick just one. Most members end up in a mix, a destination group for their next trip, an interest group for the people they want to meet along the way, and maybe an advice group for the questions that come up in between. Communities are free to join and easy to find from the Explore tab.

If there’s a community you wish existed and don’t see here, that’s usually the first sign someone should start one.

  1. Hi, I am Sharif Shah — a government teacher and a tourism lover.

I have a small hotel at Rupal valley, Astore — at the confluence of the mighty Nanga Parbat (Rupal Face), the highest mountain face in the world.

All travelers are most welcome at my hotel and my home.

If you want to explore Nanga Parbat on a budget, you are also welcome. And if anyone has budget problems, please don’t hesitate — just contact me, I will help you.

  2. Hi Steve,

    Thanks for this message.
I already am a moderator in four communities.
I did some research and saw empty communities:

    https://www.couchsurfing.com/c/communities/erasmus-brussels-belgium
    https://www.couchsurfing.com/c/communities/brussels-babel
    https://www.couchsurfing.com/c/communities/queer-women-brussels

    This community not empty, but
    https://www.couchsurfing.com/c/communities/brussels-belgium
is overlapping with the new Brussels community.

    Have a look here too:
    https://www.couchsurfing.com/c/communities/brussels-queer
13 members, not active and there is another group called
    https://www.couchsurfing.com/c/communities/queer-brussels
    with more members

    Other empty communities
    https://www.couchsurfing.com/c/communities/soundwave-2013-m
There seem to be a lot of these soundwave groups in several cities…

I would suggest to delete these communities. I suggested that to support, but they replied: “Regarding the empty and duplicate communities you mentioned, we are unable to delete communities from our end. For that, we recommend reaching out to Mike directly, as he would be the right person to handle those requests.”
